If you are under 25 years old and have to rent a car, you will soon discover how inordinately expensive such a task will quickly become. Underage fees can sometimes double the price of rented transportation. Furthermore, the task of renting a car in general requires a way of comparing endless rental companies and choices. But for the discerning individual, Zipcar presents a whole new option.
For those who know what they want and when they want it, Zipcar provides cars to college students who are at least 18 years of age and to any potential driver who is at least 21 years of age.
Zipcar has programs in fifteen major cities within the United States. Those programs come with a variety of locations and parking lots where Zipcars can be found. Simply by signing up and creating an account, a driver will be given the option to reserve a vehicle according to his or her needs.
The system is genius in its simplicity. Reservations can be made online or through the phone. Once made, your Zipcar membership card becomes activated as a key. Walk up to the car you have rented at the nearby parking lot and tap your membership card to the windshield. And voila! The car unlocks and you are free to use it for the allotted time.
Not only that but once you are a member in one city, you are a Zipcar member in all the cities. Live in New York City but traveling to Los Angeles? Arrange for a car to be ready and waiting for you whenever you need it. No underage fees, no unexpected charges, and no hassle.
The only thing on which Zipcar is clear-cut is having a clean driving record. You may have no more than two moving violations or accidents on your record and no major violations all in the past three years. Additionally, you may have no alcohol or drug related violations in the past seven years. And for the 18-year-old potential drivers, no moving violations or accidents, no major violations, and no alcohol/drug related violations at all.
